Several people have been killed while others sustained injuries after a fire broke out during a New Year’s celebration at a popular Alpine ski resort in southern Switzerland.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, January 1, 2026, at Le Constellation lounge bar in Crans-Montana, located in the canton of Valais. According to the Valais cantonal police, the fire started at about 1:30a.m. during a New Year’s party.
Confirming the incident, police spokesperson Gaetan Lathion said emergency responders were immediately deployed to the scene.
“This morning, January 1, 2026, a fire broke out around 1:30a.m. at Le Constellation lounge bar in Crans-Montana in the canton of Valais. There are several injuries, several fatalities,” Lathion stated.
Authorities have not yet released the exact number of those killed or injured, nor have they disclosed the cause of the fire. Crans-Montana is known internationally as a high-end holiday and ski destination, attracting visitors from around the world.
Lathion said further details would be provided at a joint press conference involving the police and the canton’s public prosecutor, scheduled for later in the day.
Investigations into the cause of the blaze are ongoing.
