Seven persons have been confirmed injured following a fire outbreak at the 22-storey Great Nigeria Insurance House on Martins Street, Lagos Island.

The incident, which occurred around 5:00p.m. on Christmas Eve, affected the high-rise building and several adjoining structures, including the seven-storey Radio Nigeria building, the popular Oluwole Plaza, a mosque and other nearby buildings.

Confirming the development in an update released on Christmas Day, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Mr Nosa Okunbor, said the fire reportedly started from the fourth floor of the building before spreading to other floors.

According to him, seven adult males sustained varying degrees of burn injuries, were immediately attended to by LASEMA paramedics before being rushed to nearby hospitals for further medical care.

Okunbor added that five other persons suffered smoke inhalation and were treated at the scene by emergency responders.

He explained that following the escalation of the fire, LASEMA had earlier issued a public alert, urging residents and traders within the vicinity to evacuate the area to ensure their safety.

“The adjoining buildings in proximity to the high-rise have largely been salvaged, and coordinated efforts continue to ensure the inferno is completely extinguished,” Okunbor said.

He further disclosed that the fire at the seven-storey Radio Nigeria building opposite the Great Nigeria Insurance House had been successfully put out, while dampening-down operations were ongoing to prevent a reoccurrence.

Emergency responders, including LASEMA, other relevant agencies, remain on ground to ensure the situation is fully brought under control and normalcy restored in the area.
