Senegal, on Sunday night, emerged champions of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, after edging hosts Morocco 1 – 0 in a dramatic, controversy-filled final played at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, Rabat.
The keenly contested encounter was marred by prolonged stoppages, heated protests and players briefly leaving the pitch following a contentious penalty decision late in regulation time.
The final took a dramatic turn deep into stoppage time when the referee, after a VAR review, awarded Morocco a penalty, a decision that sparked furious protests from Senegalese players.
The situation quickly descended into chaos as players surrounded the referee, leading to a lengthy halt in play.
Tensions escalated further when players from both sides temporarily walked off the pitch before returning, following intervention by match officials and security personnel.
Morocco’s hopes of snatching a late winner were dashed when Brahim Díaz failed to convert from the spot kick, with Senegal goalkeeper Édouard Mendy brilliantly saving his Panenka attempt, further inflaming emotions inside the packed stadium.
After regulation time ended goalless, the match moved into extra time amid a charged atmosphere.
Senegal finally broke the deadlock in the 94th minute when Pape Gueye unleashed a powerful long-range strike that flew into the top corner, silencing the home crowd.
Senegal’s victory crowned them African champions in what will be remembered as one of the most dramatic, controversial finals in recent AFCON history, achieved on Moroccan soil before a passionate home crowd in Rabat.
