The Senate on Wednesday, December 10 appealed to President, Bola Tinubu to exempt federal lawmakers from the presidential directive – mandating the withdrawal of police personnel from VIPs.
It warned that the policy poses significant security risks to members of the National Assembly.
The call was made after Senator Abdul Ningi (Kebbi Central) raised a point of concern during plenary, revealing that his only police orderly had been withdrawn without prior notice.
Ningi lamented that while senators were being stripped of security protection, “sons and daughters of political office holders, Chinese business officials, singers, and many others still move around with large security convoys.”
Responding, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, who presided over the sitting, said the Senate leadership had met on Tuesday to consider the matter and resolved to appeal to the president to restore the officers already withdrawn.
Jibrin expressed confidence that President Tinubu would review the situation, describing him as “a listening leader” who understands the security challenges facing lawmakers.

President Tinubu had on November 23 ordered the immediate withdrawal of police personnel attached to VIPs, nationwide.
The Special Protection Unit (SPU) of the Nigeria Police Force has since begun implementing the directive, leading to widespread reactions from those affected.
