The Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) has intensified sanitation oversight as 54 solid waste management contractors commenced cleaning and evacuation of waste in Abuja.
Recall that the Minister of FCT Nyesom Wike, last week had a meeting with the recently engaged contractors to ensure an immediate improvement in sanitation in the territory, and warned them against excuses.
While monitoring the commencement of the exercise on Monday, the Director, Solid Waste Management, North, of AEPB, Enwerem Benjamin, said the operations was in line with the minister’s directives to keep the city clean.
He opined that the inspection will ensure implementation and assess deployment of equipment and personnel by the contractors on the field.
Benjamin called on the residents, who do not have proper waste bins to get one, and avoid indiscriminate dumping of waste in the city.

He said: “I appreciate the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, for approving the new city-cleaning contract, which has been long-awaited. It’s a major boost for the board.

“Today marks the official commencement of operations by the new contractors, in line with the Minister’s directives.
“We are here on this first day of implementation to assess their deployment of equipment and personnel on the field..
“So far, we have covered the Central Business District (CBD), Maitama, District and parts of Asokoro.
“The performance is fair. They have started well. If they sustain this momentum, just as the Minister said, within five days, residents will forget the environmental state they saw in the past.
“Residents who do not have proper waste bins need to get one immediately.
“Our next step is to conduct inspections to identify households without the required bins”.
End.
