The Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH) has unveiled advanced renal care services, including High Ultrafiltration Continuous Kidney Replacement Therapy, Automated Peritoneal Dialysis, and Plasmapheresis, aimed at improving the treatment of kidney-related diseases in the state.
Consultant Nephrologist, Professor Chizindu Alikor, disclosed this during the hospital’s World Kidney Day event held at the RSUTH facility in Port Harcourt.
Professor Alikor explained that the newly introduced equipment and services will enhance the hospital’s capacity to manage patients suffering from various forms of kidney disease.

He commended the efforts of Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, in strengthening the state’s healthcare sector, noting that the availability of such specialized services at RSUTH would reduce the need for patients to seek treatment abroad.
According to him, patients requiring advanced kidney care can now access quality treatment locally at the teaching hospital.
In her welcome address, the Head of the Renal Centre at RSUTH, Dr. Beniboba Eleki, said kidney disease remains a major contributor to the rising burden of non-communicable diseases worldwide.
She noted that chronic kidney disease is currently the ninth leading cause of death globally, with an estimated prevalence of about 9.8 per cent.

Dr. Eleki stressed that early detection and prompt treatment remain the most effective strategies for combating the disease, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where out-of-pocket healthcare expenditure is still prevalent.
