Romania has approved a request from the United States to deploy refueling aircraft, surveillance equipment, and satellite communications systems at its military bases, officials said on Wednesday.

Romanian President, Nicusor Dan said the country’s top defense council authorized the move, describing the equipment as defensive in nature and not carrying weapons or ammunition. Romania’s parliament is expected to vote on the deployment later.

The equipment will support monitoring operations linked to regional security concerns involving Iran and broader developments in the Middle East.

Romania, a member of the NATO and the European Union, hosts a US-developed missile defense system at Deveselu designed to protect allied countries from potential ballistic missile threats.

President Dan said the new deployment would include refueling planes and monitoring systems connected to the missile shield infrastructure already operating in the country.

About 1,000 US troops currently remain stationed in Romania, while the broader allied presence in the country stands at roughly 3,500 NATO personnel.

Romania shares a 650-kilometre border with Ukraine, where the ongoing conflict with Russia has raised security concerns across the Black Sea region and affected key trade and energy routes.
