Some residents of Rivers State have described the lawsuit filed by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) against Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd) over an alleged ₦302 billion expenditure as unnecessary, arguing that the former naval chief acted under the authority of the President.
SERAP had reportedly initiated legal action demanding accountability and transparency regarding the alleged spending attributed to Ibas. However, reactions from some residents suggest that not everyone believes the suit is warranted.
Speaking in an interview, a resident simply identified as Michael stated that Ibas was appointed directly by the President and operated based on presidential directives. According to him, the President was fully aware of the administrator’s activities, making the demand for accountability misplaced.
Michael maintained that Ibas should not be seen as the source of Rivers State’s political challenges. Instead, he said the retired naval officer should be allowed to concentrate on his ambassadorial responsibilities without unnecessary distractions.
“Ibas took instructions directly from the President, who was aware of everything he did. Calling him out now is not necessary,” he said.
Another resident who spoke on the ground of anonymity expressed skepticism about the likelihood of the case yielding any meaningful outcome. He pointed out that, historically, it has been rare to see public officials in Rivers State successfully prosecuted for alleged misconduct.
According to him, the legal action may not progress far, especially given that Ibas was appointed by the President and carried out his duties within that framework.

The resident also used the opportunity to criticize the ongoing political tensions in Rivers State, urging political leaders to focus on governance rather than power struggles.
He called on politicians in the state to look towards neighboring Abia State as an example of effective leadership and governance. According to him, leadership in Abia reflects the will of the people and demonstrates a commitment to development and stability.

“The governor – there, represents the people’s mandate and has shown leadership and effective governance. That is what we should be talking about, not the power tussle currently happening in Rivers State,” he said.
