Rivers State Executive Council has approved a ₦1.854 trillion budget proposal for the 2026 fiscal year.
The approval was granted during the State Executive Council meeting held on Friday evening.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, the newly sworn-in Special Adviser to the Governor on Economic Matters and Social Development, Professor Peter Medee, described the budget as designed to enable the state complete ongoing projects, advance critical sector initiatives.
He said the 2026 budget, christened the “Budget of Resilience for Growth and Development,” totals ₦1,854,248,734,475.76.
Professor Medee emphasized that the state government remains committed towards meeting its development targets for the people, despite current administrative, economic challenges.
Also present at the joint briefing were the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information and Communications, Dr Honour Sirawoo, and the newly sworn-in Special Adviser on Finance, Frank Fubara. Fubara had earlier sworn in five new Special Advisers at the Government House on Friday.
The announcement comes amid an ongoing tug-of-war between Governor Nyesom Wike and the Rivers State House of Assembly.
Since returning to office following the six-month emergency rule imposed by President Bola Tinubu, the House has accused Fubara of drawing from the state consolidated revenue accounts without approval since 2023.
In their first sitting, after the emergency rule, Speaker Martin Amaewhule demanded that the Governor present the 2025 budget, forward names of commissioner nominees for screening and approval.
