The member representing Gboko/Tarka Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Mrs Regina Akume, has publicly called on her husband, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, to “come back to Christianity,” saying his rise to prominence was rooted in his Christian faith.
Mrs Akume made the remarks during the wedding reception of the SGF’s son in Makurdi, Benue State, an event that also coincided with Senator Akume’s 72nd birthday celebration.
In a video of the moment, which surfaced on social media on Monday, was shared by Idoma Television, Mrs Akume prayed for her husband’s long life, sound health, while admonishing him not to abandon Christianity.
“I pray that the Lord will increase his years, give him good health of mind and body, and clarity in doing the right thing,” she said.
“He should remember that he is a Christian, and it is Christianity that brought him this far. To drop Christianity now and go for anything else, he will not be successful.”
She added that Senator Akume’s political and personal journey was divinely guided. “We came all the way to the office of SGF, not through enemies but through Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is still alive, still working for us. I wish that he would come back to Christianity.”
Her remarks have generated widespread reactions, coming amid public discussions following reports that the SGF recently married an additional wife.
As earlier reported, Senator Akume reportedly married Zaynab Ngohemba-George, the former wife of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi.
The marriage became public on December 26, 2025, after a Facebook post by a member of the Akume Dajoh family welcomed Zaynab into the family, triggering mixed reactions online.
When contacted, the SGF’s spokesman, Yomi Odunuga, confirmed the marriage but clarified that the union is over a year old, not a recent development.
