Qatar has confirmed it is engaging with mediators to facilitate the reopening of the Rafah border crossing into the Gaza Strip to allow the delivery of humanitarian aid.
The Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs said communications are ongoing as part of efforts to advance the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire agreement. Officials stressed that humanitarian assistance must not be used as a tool of political pressure.
Reopening the Rafah crossing with Egypt was a key condition of the first phase of the ceasefire that came into effect on October 10.
However, the crossing has remained closed, with humanitarian organizations reporting that Israeli restrictions continue to obstruct aid deliveries, in violation of the ceasefire terms.
The Rafah crossing had served as Gaza’s primary link to the outside world before Israeli forces took control of the Palestinian side in May 2024. Reports earlier this month indicated that preparations were underway for a possible reopening of the crossing, potentially allowing movement in both directions.
Palestinians have expressed mixed reactions to the prospect of reopening. While many view it as an opportunity to access medical treatment, education, and reunite with separated family members, others fear it could be used to facilitate the permanent displacement of residents from Gaza.
Despite the ceasefire, Israeli military operations have continued. Gaza health authorities report that at least 422 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces since the truce took effect in October, including civilians sheltering in displacement camps.
Efforts by mediators to fully implement the ceasefire and restore humanitarian access into Gaza remain ongoing amid heightened tensions and uncertainty.
