Russian President Vladimir Putin has remained silent, following the U.S. abduction of Venezuelan President, Nicolas Maduro, by Delta Force commandos, who are now holding him in New York, pending trial on drug trafficking charges.
Despite Russia’s previous defence cooperation with Venezuela, Moscow refrained from military intervention.
Analysts say Putin’s prestige suffered as Maduro was a loyal ally, but the Kremlin may see strategic advantage in letting Washington establish a new global order, based on force.
Experts also suggest the incident highlights Russia’s limitations abroad, and that the U.S. may leverage such actions to strengthen control over key global resources, including Greenland and Russia’s Arctic energy fields.
Observers warn that while Russia projects influence, Putin’s inaction could encourage similar operations elsewhere, potentially even targeting Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
