The Cross River State Police Command has recovered eight dried corpses from a local embalmment facility in Isong Inyang Community, Akamkpa Local Government Area, and arrested one suspect in connection with the discovery.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday, said the discovery followed credible intelligence received by operatives on February 13, 2026, regarding the presence of corpses at the mortuary located along the Calabar–Ikom Highway.

He explained that police operatives were immediately deployed to the facility to verify the report.

“Upon arrival, eight well-dried corpses were discovered in the hall,” the statement said.

The police spokesman disclosed that prompt action by officers led to the arrest of the suspect, identified as Sunday Ben Reuben, a native of Nsit Ibom in Akwa Ibom State.

According to ASP Sunday, preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect is a mortician employed by Enghaut Company Mortuary in Akamkpa Local Government Area.

The suspect is currently in police custody while a comprehensive investigation is ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the presence of the corpses and whether any laws were violated.

The Command urged members of the public to remain calm and refrain from speculation, assuring that further verified information would be made available as investigations progress.

Police authorities reiterated their commitment to upholding the law and ensuring public safety across the state.
