The Rivers State Police Command has commenced a full-scale investigation into the killing of an ushering manager, identified as Special Bensington, by suspected gunmen in Port Harcourt.
The command’s spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday, confirming that the incident occurred on March 21 at about 4:30 p.m.
According to the police, the victim was in the company of her friend, Miss Divine Anyanwu, when they were attacked while on a Bolt ride to an event centre along Odili Road.
Preliminary findings indicate that the assailants may have trailed the victims from a hotel where they boarded the ride, following them in a tricycle before opening fire at the Total Gospel area, off Odili Road.
The police said Bensington sustained gunshot injuries during the attack and was rushed to the BMH Hospital, where she was later confirmed dead while receiving treatment.
“Following the report, the Divisional Police Officer, Abuloma Division, alongside his team, visited both the scene of the incident and the hospital.
The deceased has been deposited in the mortuary for autopsy,” the statement said.
Iringe-Koko added that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further forensic investigation.
She condemned the incident, describing it as a “gruesome act,” and assured residents that efforts were underway to apprehend those responsible.
The police also called on members of the public with useful information to assist in the investigation, assuring that updates would be provided as the case progresses.
