A viral video circulating on social media has triggered widespread outrage following scenes of alleged sexual assault involving several women during a local festival in Ozoro, Delta State.

The footage, which surfaced on Friday, shows groups of young men reportedly harassing women in public, forcefully tearing their clothes and subjecting them to various forms of molestation.

According to reports, the incident occurred on Thursday, March 19, during an annual community festival, where women are allegedly expected to remain indoors. It was further claimed that any woman found outside during the event becomes a target for harassment by participants.

Unverified accounts also suggested that some victims may have been raped, although authorities have yet to confirm those claims.

Reacting to the development, the spokesperson of the Delta State Police Command, Bright Edafe, described the incident as “alarming, disgusting, and embarrassing.”

He disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Aina Adesola, has ordered a full-scale investigation into the matter.

“This is alarming, disgusting, and embarrassing. The CP has ordered an investigation into the incident,” Edafe stated.

He reiterated the command’s position that no cultural practice can override the fundamental rights of citizens.

“The command condemns this in totality; no custom or tradition is superior to the rights of citizens,” he added.

Edafe further assured the public that those responsible would be identified and brought to justice.

“The Commissioner of Police urges residents to remain calm while investigations are ongoing. Those responsible for this barbaric act will be arrested and prosecuted,” he said.

The police also called on witnesses and members of the public with useful information to come forward to assist in the ongoing investigation.

The incident has since sparked condemnation from various quarters, with renewed calls for accountability and stronger measures to protect women from gender-based violence in public spaces.
