The Nigeria Police Council on Monday unanimously ratified the appointment of Olatunji Rilwan Disu as the new Inspector-General of Police (IGP), clearing the way for his swearing-in by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday.
The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled to take place during the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting at the State House.
President Tinubu appointed Disu following the resignation of the former Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
Several council members and governors commended the appointment, describing Disu as a seasoned, professional officer.
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, praised Disu’s performance as Commander of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in Lagos between 2015 and 2021, noting that the squad earned recognition for excellence in crime control under his leadership.
Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, described the appointment as well-deserved, citing Disu’s distinguished service record.
FCT Minister Nyesom Wike also lauded Disu’s professionalism, recalling his tenure in Rivers State as Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department and head of the anti-kidnapping unit between 2014 and 2015.
Wike further commended his impact as Commissioner of Police in the FCT Command.
Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State seconded the motion – endorsing the appointment during the Council meeting.
Born on April 13, 1966, in Lagos State, Disu joined the Nigeria Police Force on May 18, 1992, as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police.
Over the years, he has held several strategic operational and investigative positions across the country.
Before his appointment, Disu served as Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Special Protection Unit and the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex in Lagos.
He holds multiple qualifications in public administration, forensic investigation, criminology, security, legal psychology, and entrepreneurship.
The Presidency expressed confidence that Disu’s extensive experience and professional background will strengthen efforts toward modern, knowledge-driven policing in Nigeria.
