The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested a 27-year-old man, Kabiru Nuhu, for allegedly killing his 60-year-old father in Kazaure Local Government Area of the state.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, Shi’isu Adam, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Sunday, revealing that preliminary investigations indicate the suspect poured a flammable substance, suspected to be petrol, on his father and set him ablaze.

According to the police, the incident occurred in the early hours of April 1, 2026, at about 6:30 a.m. in Magama Quarters, Kazaure town.

Adam said the police received a distress report from a resident, identified as Lokon Malamai, prompting a swift response by officers to the scene.

“The victim was found severely burnt after being engulfed in flames. He was rushed to the hospital for medical attention but later died while receiving treatment,” the statement said.

The police spokesperson added that the suspect was apprehended with visible burn injuries on his forehead, arms, and toes, which further raised suspicion during initial investigations.

He disclosed that the case is being treated as patricide, a grave offence under Nigerian law, noting that the suspect will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Dutse for further investigation and prosecution.

Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Haruna Yahaya, condemned the act and assured the public that justice would be served.

“The police are working diligently to determine the motive behind this heinous act. We urge residents to embrace peaceful means of resolving disputes and to report any signs of domestic violence or conflict to the nearest police station,” Yahaya said.

The police command also called on members of the public to remain calm and cooperate with ongoing investigations, while appealing to anyone with useful information to come forward.

The command reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peace, law, and order across the state.
