Poland announced it successfully blocked a cyber attack targeting its National Centre for Nuclear Research, with preliminary investigations pointing to possible involvement by Iran. Authorities cautioned, however, that the indicators could be a deliberate attempt to obscure the attack’s true origin.

Minister for DigitalAffairs, Krzysztof Gawkowski said the breach occurred within the past few days and was contained before causing any damage. Initial analysis of the entry points suggested Iranian territory, though final verification is still underway.

The centre, focused on nuclear energy and subatomic physics, does not house nuclear weapons. Poland is currently constructing its first nuclear power plant.

The cyber attack comes amid escalating tensions in the Middle East. On February 28, the United States and Israel launched airstrikes on Iran, killing Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Tehran responded with strikes on US-aligned positions in Israel and Gulf states, disrupting energy shipments through the Strait of Hormuz.

The Iranian embassy in Warsaw has yet to comment. Polish authorities are working closely with international cyber security teams to safeguard critical infrastructure.

The incident underscores rising global concerns over cyber warfare and the risk of Middle Eastern conflicts spilling into European security domains.
