The Foundation for Partnership Initiatives in the Niger Delta (PIND) has successfully trained over 54 Peace Monitors drawn from 18 neighbouring communities around Okomu in Edo State on Conflict Early Warning and Early Response (EWER), in a move aimed at strengthening grassroots mechanisms for conflict prevention and peacebuilding.

The training, conducted in partnership with Okomu Oil Palm Nigeria Limited, focused on building the capacity of young community representatives to proactively identify and address potential sources of conflict before they escalate into violence.

Participants were equipped with practical skills to detect and report early warning signals, analyze and verify emerging conflict risks, and distinguish rumours from credible information.

The programme also introduced participants to structured community-based monitoring systems and digital tools designed to enhance timely reporting and response.

According to the organizers, sustainable peace can only be achieved when communities possess trained actors, coordinated systems, and effective technological tools to anticipate and prevent conflict.

The newly trained Peace Monitors are expected to serve as the first line of early response within their respective communities. By monitoring tensions and reporting credible information promptly, they will help ensure that emerging disputes are addressed early, thereby reducing the risk of escalation.

The initiative forms part of PIND Foundation’s broader commitment to promoting peace, stability, and sustainable development across communities in the Niger Delta region.
