Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticised the All-Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government over Nigeria’s ranking in the Global Terrorism Index 2026, where the country was placed fourth globally in terms of the impact of terrorism.
In a press statement issued on Thursday and signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, the PDP described the ranking as a troubling reflection of the country’s worsening security situation.
According to the report by the Institute for Economics and Peace, Nigeria, alongside four other countries, accounted for nearly 70 per cent of global terrorism-related deaths, with the country also recording one of the highest increases in fatalities.
Reacting, the PDP said the findings align with the experiences of many Nigerians, who it claimed are facing heightened insecurity across the country.
The party criticised what it described as the Federal Government’s ineffective and reactive approach to tackling security challenges.
The opposition party called on President Bola Tinubu and the nation’s security leadership to adopt a comprehensive, proactive strategy, including a “whole-of-society approach,” to address the issue.
It stressed the need for policies that would both curb immediate threats and promote long-term peaceful coexistence.
“The primary responsibility of any government is the protection of lives and property,” the statement noted, urging the administration to intensify efforts to improve national security.
The PDP also appealed to the President to leverage his leadership capacity to deliver practical solutions, noting growing public concern over persistent attacks and insecurity.
