The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom State has criticized Governor Umo Eno over the ongoing construction of official residences for local government chairmen across the state.

In a press statement issued on Wednesday, signed by the State Publicity Secretary of the party, Comrade Ewa Okpo, the PDP described the project as unnecessary and ill-timed, especially in the face of prevailing economic hardship in the country.

The opposition party questioned there rationale behind the construction of new residences for council chairmen, arguing that the funds could have been channelled towards projects with more direct benefits to the people, including healthcare, education and infrastructure.

The PDP also faulted the decision to embark on the project while existing facilities, such as security village quarters originally built to accommodate council officials, are allegedly left unused or abandoned.

According to the party, the construction of the residences raises concerns about transparency and fiscal responsibility, particularly with regard to the utilisation of state and local government funds.

The PDP further alleged that the project could be linked to political motives ahead of future elections, calling on the state government to provide clear explanations to the public on the cost, scope and funding sources of the initiative.

The party urged Governor Eno to reconsider the project, focus on policies and programmes it says would have a more positive and immediate impact on the welfare of Akwa Ibom residents.
