A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has escalated the ongoing leadership tussle within the party to the Supreme Court, expressing confidence that the apex court will resolve the dispute and safeguard internal party democracy.
In a press statement issued on Monday, the group said it had filed an appeal and accompanying applications before the Supreme Court to determine all issues relating to the party’s leadership, particularly the question of internal affairs.
The statement, signed by the National Publicity Secretary of the faction, Comrade Ini Ememobong, described recent developments within the party as “disturbing,” noting that members across the country are increasingly concerned about the future of the PDP and Nigeria’s democracy.
The group criticized what it described as a “pre-Easter jamboree” allegedly organized by supporters of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, dismissing it as an illegitimate convention conducted in defiance of ongoing legal proceedings.
According to the statement, the convention was held despite an existing matter before the Court of Appeal and after parties had agreed on procedures for handling the case. It added that those involved had already been served with processes relating to the Supreme Court appeal and other suits challenging the gathering.
“The validity of that gathering is now a matter before the court, which we will diligently follow to its conclusion,” the statement read.
The faction also reacted to a Federal High Court judgment delivered in Abuja by Justice Abdulmalik, which reportedly granted the Wike-backed group access to the PDP national secretariat and directed security agencies to provide protection.
In response, the group said it had instructed its legal team to file an immediate appeal against the ruling.
While acknowledging the severity of the internal crisis, the faction alleged that the situation was being influenced by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing it of attempting to weaken opposition parties and impose a one-party system.

“These are very trying times for the PDP and all opposition parties in Nigeria,” the statement said, adding that Nigerians would ultimately judge the current administration based on its performance in key areas such as security and the economy.

The group, however, urged party members and supporters to remain hopeful, expressing optimism that the Supreme Court would uphold the Constitution and protect multi-party democracy when it delivers its final verdict on the matter.
