No fewer than 28,213 applicants have applied for the 4,000 teaching positions recently advertised by the Abia State Government.

Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this on Monday while briefing journalists on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti in Umuahia.

He explained that the recruitment exercise represents the second batch of the administration’s ongoing teachers’ employment programme.

According to him, the application portal opened on November 6, 2025, and closed on November 29, 2025.

Following the closure of submissions, Kanu said applicants were given an opportunity to review and correct their application details, noting that the verification window will close this week.

“Thereafter, applicants will be invited to sit for computer-based tests, successful candidates will proceed to the interview stage,” he said.

Kanu added that the state plans to recruit an additional 4,000 teachers from the exercise, bringing the total number of teachers employed under the current administration to over 9,000, following the earlier recruitment of 5,394 teachers last year.

The Commissioner also disclosed that the state government has concluded plans to inaugurate the Abia State Safe Schools Steering Committee, aimed at safeguarding lives and property in schools amid growing security concerns nationwide.

According to him, the committee will serve as a multi-sectoral platform to coordinate the implementation of the Safe Schools Declaration, develop safety protocols, and mobilise financial and technical resources for the protection of learning institutions across the state.

On digital governance, Kanu said the Office of the Chief Information Officer has recorded notable achievements, including the establishment of a Document Digitization Bureau in collaboration with the Ministry of Lands to manage land records, and the launch of a centralised online recruitment platform to promote access and equity in public sector employment.

Other milestones include the redesign of the Abia State Government website and the implementation of an e-Health project, with six pilot hospitals already automating medical records and hospital management systems.

He also revealed that computer laptops have been procured, distributed to senior government officials to support the state’s digital transformation drive.

On education infrastructure, Kanu said monitoring teams will be deployed to ensure compliance with school resumption guidelines, while work continues on the state’s mass school and smart school projects, with two smart schools expected to be ready for commissioning by February.

He further disclosed that the state’s urban mass transit scheme, which began a pilot phase on December 24, 2025, has recorded strong public response, with over 31,500 passengers benefiting from free bus rides during the trial period.

According to him, full commercial operations will commence soon, as supporting infrastructure such as bus terminals, junction improvements, and charging stations are nearing completion.
