OpenAI has revealed in a Jew threat report that its ChatGPT technology has been misused by actors involved in romance scams, fake law firms, and covert influence campaigns, including an attempt to target Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. The company said it has banned accounts linked to these activities.
According to OpenAI, some accounts likely originating from China used the chatbot to collect information on U.S. persons, federal buildings, and online forums, and to generate English-language emails inviting targets to paid consultations. One account associated with Chinese law enforcement orchestrated a covert campaign against Takaichi.
Other accounts used ChatGPT to conduct a dating scam targeting Indonesian men, producing promotional content and pressuring victims into making large payments. Additional accounts impersonated law firms and U.S. officials to target fraud victims.
OpenAI emphasized that these cases show how AI tools can be exploited in cybercrime and political influence operations, highlighting the need for robust monitoring and safeguards.
