A 37-year-old nurse, Kehinde Adesanya, has been remanded at the Ibara Correctional Centre in Abeokuta for 60 days over the alleged unlawful abortion that resulted in the death of a 23-year-old National Youth Service Corps member, Victoria Ariyo.
Adesanya was arraigned on Thursday before a Magistrate Court sitting in Isabo, Abeokuta, on a four-count charge bordering on conspiracy, procurement of abortion, and murder.
Police counsel, Solomon Babalola, told the court that the alleged offences were committed between January and March 2026 in the Ikereku area of Laderin, Abeokuta.
He alleged that drugs supplied by the defendant for the purpose of terminating the pregnancy led to the death of the corps member.
The charges include conspiracy to commit abortion, unlawful procurement of abortion, conspiracy to commit murder, and unlawful killing, contrary to relevant provisions of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State, 2006.
Magistrate O. Sam-Obaleye granted the prosecution’s request to remand the defendant for 60 days pending legal advice from the state Director of Public Prosecutions and adjourned the case until May 26, 2026.
In a related development, police disclosed that the deceased was allegedly in a relationship with Abass Olalekan, the NYSC Inspector for Abeokuta South Local Government Area, which resulted in the pregnancy.
Olalekan had earlier been arraigned before another Magistrate Court on two counts of conspiracy and attempt to procure abortion.
He pleaded not guilty and was granted bail in the sum of N500,000.
