Controversial Nigerian singer, Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, was on Monday arraigned before the Federal High Court sitting in Ota, Ogun State, over a nine-count criminal charge bordering on assault, theft, causing bodily harm, and resisting arrest.
The charges were confirmed by the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, who disclosed that the singer’s arraignment followed a viral video that surfaced on Sunday showing him in police custody.
According to the prosecution, the charges stem from a complaint allegedly filed by Portable’s estranged partner, Ashabi Simple, over an incident said to have occurred on New Year’s Day at the singer’s bar in the Iyana Ilogbo area of Ogun State.
Police alleged that Portable assaulted Ashabi, alongside several police officers and other individuals, during the incident.
Other alleged victims listed in the charge sheet include Ileyemi Damilola, Akinyanju Oluwabusayomi, Olowu Olumide, Demilade Ogunniyi, and Ebuka Odah.
The singer was also accused of stealing a Mercedes-Benz E300, valued at ₦12 million, belonging to Ileyemi Damilola and reportedly linked to car dealer Wally Dex Auto.
During the court proceedings, two siblings of Ashabi Simple testified as witnesses to the alleged assault, although Ashabi was absent in court.
The prosecution further alleged that Portable obstructed and assaulted a female police inspector, Ogungbe Olayemi, while she was performing her official duties.
The presiding judge declined to grant the singer bail, citing the absence of the allegedly assaulted police officer in court.
The judge ruled that the officer must be present before a decision on the bail application could be taken.
Portable was consequently remanded in custody, with the case adjourned to January 19 for further hearing and consideration of bail.
Meanwhile, the Ogun State Police Command has ordered an investigation into a separate viral video that appears to show the singer being assaulted while in police custody.
