Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Governing Council of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Professor Abdulgafar Siyan Oyeweso, has passed away at the age of 64.
The news was announced on Tuesday via X (formerly Twitter) by Olalekan Badmus, Special Assistant on Digital Media to Governor Ademola Adeleke.
In his post, Badmus expressed his grief, writing, “Rest in power, Prof. Siyan Oyeweso. An illustrious son of Ede, Osun State, and Nigeria. What a sad loss!”
Prof. Oyeweso’s younger brother, Olawale Oyeweso, confirmed his death in a statement, noting that he passed away on Tuesday, 2nd December 2025, after a brief illness.
He added that the late professor’s remains would be buried at his country home in Ede by 4 pm today, following solat Ashri.

Prof. Oyeweso, a distinguished historian and educator, is survived by his wife, children, and extended family.
A respected academic and mentor, he held the position of Professor of History and had served with distinction as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of OAU’s Governing Council.
Throughout his career, Prof. Oyeweso was widely regarded as an authority on Nigerian history, politics, religion, and culture, making significant contributions to scholarship and the development of young minds.
