The pioneer Chief Executive of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Colonel Ahmadu Ali (Rtd), has affirmed that the NYSC is a permanent institution in Nigeria.
He made this remark during a visit from the current Director-General of the Scheme, Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, at his residence in Abuja.
Colonel Ali highlighted that the NYSC, through its programmes and visible impact across the country for over five decades, has continued to win the hearts of Nigerians and establish itself as an enduring national institution.

He lauded the vision of former Head of State General Yakubu Gowon, under whose leadership the NYSC was founded in 1973, describing the initiative as a programme that remains relevant to the nation.
According to Ali, the Scheme plays a crucial role in promoting national unity. “Participants have the opportunity to serve in states they might not otherwise visit,” he said, emphasizing how the experience fosters tolerance and resilience among young Nigerians.
The retired Colonel also commended the current managers of the NYSC for preserving the vision of the Scheme’s founders. He noted the transformation in public perception over the years from initial skepticism and resistance among graduates to excitement and anticipation surrounding service year participation.
He expressed his continued support and prayers for the Scheme’s longevity.
In response, Director-General Nafiu said the visit aimed to honor Ali’s foundational role in the NYSC, acknowledging the solid structures he put in place that have ensured the Scheme’s stability for more than five decades.

He lauded Ali for his administrative skill and wisdom in overcoming early challenges, stressing that the NYSC remains indebted to the pioneer Chief Executive for his enduring leadership.
