The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council, has expressed concern over several emerging challenges in the State and called for urgent intervention from government and security agencies.
These resolutions were contained in a communiqué issued at the end of its Congress held on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, at the NUJ Press Centre, Information Drive, Uyo.
At the meeting, Congress received updates on preparations for the 2025 Press Week billed to commence on November 30, 2025, with a Thanksgiving Service at All Grace Ministry, IBB Avenue, Uyo.
Raising alarm over rising cases of car theft in the state, Congress urged security agencies particularly the Nigeria Police Force to intensify surveillance and take decisive steps to curb the growing menace.
Similarly, the rising number of mentally unstable persons roaming the streets of Uyo drew serious concern from journalists.
Congress called on relevant government agencies to clear the streets and provide necessary care, describing the situation as both a humanitarian and security issue.
It also noted reports alleging that many of the destitute are being brought into the state at night from neighbouring states.
On issues of governance and accountability, the NUJ urged Local Government Councils to adhere strictly to the directive of the Akwa Ibom State Fiscal Responsibility Board requiring all LGAs to maintain functional online portals for publishing budgets, financial reports, and audited accounts.
Congress stressed that such transparency measures are vital to strengthening public trust.
The Union further expressed displeasure over the acute shortage of teachers in primary schools across Ini Local Government Area, noting that some schools operate with as few as three to six teachers.
It called on the state government to take swift action to address the manpower gap and prevent further decline in the quality of basic education.

Congress also appealed to the Akwa Ibom State Government to expedite repairs of potholes across major roads in Uyo metropolis, especially with the onset of the dry season which provides favourable conditions for road maintenance.
The communiqué was signed by members of the drafting committee: Comrade Kenneth Jude (Chairman), Comrade Mercy Obot (Secretary), Comrade Otobong Ekanem (Member), alongside Comrade Nsikak Esenowo, State Secretary, and Comrade Nsibiet John, State Chairman.
