North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un oversaw the test-launch of 12 600mm-calibre multiple rocket launchers on March 14, according to the state-run Korean Central News Agency. The tests come as the United States and South Korea conducted annual military drills in the South.

State media reported that the rockets hit targets in the East Sea with “100 percent accuracy,” covering distances of approximately 364 kilometers. Kim described the exercise as a demonstration of the destructive power of tactical nuclear weapons, intended to send a warning to potential adversaries.

South Korea confirmed that more than 10 ballistic missiles were launched from near Pyongyang, flying around 350 kilometers toward the sea. North Korea has indicated it will conduct regular drills to maintain its war deterrence capabilities.

The tests occur amid ongoing US-North Korea diplomatic tensions. South Korea’s Prime Minister, Kim Min-seok recently met with US President, Donald Trump in Washington to discuss potential dialogue with Pyongyang.

Despite decades of UN sanctions and international pressure, North Korea continues its missile development programme, pursuing capabilities to deliver nuclear weapons.
