Nigeria’s naval force has been ranked the strongest in Africa and 22nd in the world according to the 2026 Global Firepower (GFP) assessment. The ranking highlights the size and structure of the Nigerian Navy’s fleet, which includes 152 vessels and reflects sustained investment in maritime security and capability.

The fleet, built with patrol vessels as its core component, plays a critical role in safeguarding Nigeria’s 853-kilometre coastline and extensive waterways. These assets are deployed mainly for patrolling territorial waters, combating piracy and smuggling, and protecting key maritime infrastructure in the Gulf of Guinea.

Ranking first in Africa ahead of other continental powers such as Egypt and Algeria, the Nigerian Navy’s position underscores the country’s strategic focus on coastal defence and maritime security. Nigeria’s overall military strength in the broader 2026 Global Firepower Index stands at 33rd globally and third in Africa behind Egypt and Algeria.
