The Nigerian government has issued a stern warning to citizens about being recruited to fight in foreign conflicts, following reports that two Nigerians, Hamzat Kolawole and Mbah Udoka, were killed while serving in the Russian army in Ukraine.
Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, through spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa, highlighted growing cases of Nigerians being lured abroad under false promises of employment, education, or migration opportunities, only to be coerced into military service.
The deceased were found in the Luhansk region of Eastern Ukraine, having reportedly joined the Russian army in mid to late 2025 after signing contracts under misleading circumstances. Investigations suggest recruiters often use deceptive tactics such as high salaries, signing bonuses, and fast-tracked citizenship, with victims sometimes forced to sign documents in foreign languages and have their travel documents confiscated.
Minister Tuggar emphasized that participation in foreign conflicts without government approval is dangerous and may violate Nigerian and international laws. He urged citizens to verify all overseas opportunities through official channels, called on parents, community leaders, and institutions to educate young Nigerians on the risks.
The government has also directed Nigerian missions abroad to enhance consular vigilance and provide timely advisory services.
