The Nigeria Police Force has paid glowing tribute to one of its most iconic figures, Retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Cecilia Adebisi Ugowe, as she marks her 90th birthday, celebrating a lifetime of service, resilience, historic contributions to policing in Nigeria.

In a statement issued from Force Headquarters, Abuja, the Police described Ugowe as a towering figure whose career not only broke barriers rather redefined leadership standards within the institution at a time when women were scarcely represented at senior command levels.

Retired DIG Ugowe holds a unique place in the annals of the Nigeria Police Force as the first female officer to rise to the rank of Deputy Inspector-General of Police. Her trailblazing journey also saw her emerge as the first woman to serve as Commissioner of Police, Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Force Secretary; milestones that reshaped gender inclusion in Nigeria’s security architecture.

According to the Police, her rise through the ranks was driven by merit, discipline, unwavering dedication – setting a powerful example for officers across generations.

“Her career is a testament to perseverance, professional excellence,” the Force noted, adding that her leadership helped strengthen institutional professionalism, expand opportunities for women in policing.

Beyond the titles, the Police emphasized that Ugowe’s enduring legacy lies in the doors she opened for future generations, particularly female officers, proving that leadership in law enforcement is anchored on integrity, competence, service rather than convention or gender.

As the Force reflected on her life at this landmark age, it acknowledged that her contributions continue to inspire serving and retired officers alike to pursue excellence, leadership in service to the nation.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, on behalf of the Nigeria Police Force, extended warm congratulations to the retired DIG, wishing her continued good health, peace, fulfillment.

“At 90, her life remains a powerful reminder that dedication to duty can leave an indelible mark on an institution and a nation,” the statement concluded.
