The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced the resumption of the enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy, pending the final determination of the matter currently before the court.
The decision follows a comprehensive review of prevailing security challenges and the imperative to enhance public safety, nationwide.
The Force clarified that at no time did any court restrain the Nigeria Police Force from enforcing the provisions of the law, regulating the use of tinted glass on vehicles.
However, in the interest of responsibility, transparency and public convenience, enforcement was earlier suspended to allow motorists sufficient time to regularize their documentation and complete the necessary registration processes without undue pressure.
Recent security assessments have, however, revealed a worrying increase in criminal activities facilitated by the use of vehicles fitted with unauthorised tinted glass. Criminal elements and organized groups have exploited this window to conceal their identities, perpetrate offences such as armed robbery, kidnapping and other violent crimes.
In response to these developments, the Nigeria Police Force has deemed it necessary and urgent to resume full enforcement of the policy as a proactive measure to protect lives and property.
Accordingly, the enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit requirement will resume nationwide with effect from 2 January 2026.
The Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, has assured members of the public that the renewed enforcement will be conducted with the highest level of professionalism, respect for citizens’ rights and strict adherence to extant laws. He reiterated the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force towards the promotion of public safety, the rule of law and sustained collaboration with relevant stakeholders to ensure a secure Nigeria.
Motorists who require Tinted Glass Permits are therefore advised to apply through approved channels, ensure full compliance with all legal requirements relating to the use of tinted glass on vehicles.
