The Federal Government has concluded plans to procure helicopters to strengthen emergency healthcare delivery across the country as part of efforts to improve rapid medical response.
Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, disclosed this following a meeting with executives of Airbus in France, where discussions focused on the procurement of helicopters for Nigeria’s proposed National Medical Emergency Management System.
According to the minister, the initiative is aimed at enhancing the country’s capacity to respond swiftly to medical emergencies, particularly in hard-to-reach areas where timely access to healthcare services remains a challenge.
Pate explained that the planned helicopters will serve as air ambulances, enabling faster evacuation of critically ill or injured patients, supporting emergency medical teams during disasters and other urgent situations.
He noted that the development forms part of broader reforms being implemented by the Federal Government to strengthen Nigeria’s emergency healthcare infrastructure and ensure better coordination of medical response services nationwide.
The proposed National Medical Emergency Management System is expected to integrate air and ground emergency services, improve response time, and expand access to life-saving care for Nigerians.
The minister emphasized that collaboration with global aviation and medical technology partners, including Airbus, is crucial to ensuring the successful implementation of the initiative.
