The Federal Government has expressed condolences to the governments and peoples of South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe following the tragic loss of lives caused by recent devastating floods across parts of Southern Africa.
In a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja, spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, said Nigeria commiserates with the affected countries over the massive human and material losses.
The statement noted that the floods have overwhelmed rivers, damaged roads and bridges, displaced large populations, disrupted agricultural activities and essential services.
The Federal Government also expressed concern over the secondary humanitarian impacts of the disaster, including food insecurity, disease outbreaks, and the increased vulnerability of women, children and other at-risk groups.
Nigeria expressed solidarity with ongoing rescue, evacuation and relief efforts being carried out by national authorities, regional bodies and international humanitarian organizations, while acknowledging the resilience of the affected countries as they begin recovery efforts.
The statement further highlighted the growing threat of climate-related extreme weather events across Africa, called for stronger regional cooperation, improved early-warning systems, climate adaptation strategies and sustained international support.
Nigeria assured the affected countries of its continued goodwill and reaffirmed its commitment to bilateral, regional and multilateral cooperation in disaster preparedness, humanitarian response and climate resilience.
The Federal Government added that the thoughts and prayers of the Nigerian people are with all affected countries during this difficult period.
