President Bola Tinubu has urged Nigerians not to be apprehensive about the new tax regime scheduled to take effect in 2026, assuring that the policy will ease the burden on the poor, low-income earners, small businesses.
The President gave the assurance on Tuesday, December 16 at the 8th Annual Senator Abiola Ajimobi Roundtable and the 76th posthumous birthday lecture of the late former Oyo State Governor, held at the University of Ibadan.
Tinubu, who spoke through the Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, Zaccheus Adedeji, said the new tax laws would exempt essential sectors such as food, medication, education, agriculture and shared transportation from burdensome taxes, while eliminating multiple taxation on businesses.
He said recent economic reforms by his administration were already yielding positive results, citing improved GDP growth, declining inflation, reduced fiscal deficits, renewed investor confidence.
“I sssure Nigerians that there should be no apprehension about the new tax laws. They come with good news for the poor, low-income earners, small businesses,” Tinubu said.
The President also commended the late Ajimobi for his reform-driven leadership, urged members of the All Progressives Congress in Oyo State to unite, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The roundtable, on the theme “Pathways to Electoral Credibility: Reforming Political Parties, Re-engineering Citizens, and Restoring Trust in Nigerian Democracy, ” was organized by the Senator Abiola Ajimobi Foundation in collaboration with the Institute of Peace and Strategic Studies, University of Ibadan.
Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, represented by his deputy, Bayo Lawal, described the event as a fitting tribute to Ajimobi’s legacy, while lead paper presenter, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, identified political party reform as central to restoring trust in Nigeria’s democracy.
