The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has secured the release of a legal practitioner, Mrs. Lovinah Ugbana Benjamin, who was earlier remanded following proceedings before a High Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Her release, which occurred on March 26, 2026, followed swift intervention by the NBA after its President, Mazi Afam Osigwe (SAN), directed the NBA Human Rights Institute to urgently monitor and address the situation.

Acting on the directive, the Institute engaged relevant judicial and administrative authorities and worked closely with the NBA Port Harcourt Branch to facilitate her release.

The Chairman of the branch, Mrs. Cordelia Eke, was commended for her prompt response and collaboration with key stakeholders, which significantly contributed to resolving the matter.

In a statement, the NBA said the intervention reflects its commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of legal practitioners across the country.

The association, however, noted that while courts have the authority to punish for contempt, such powers must be exercised cautiously, within the bounds of due process.

The NBA Human Rights Institute assured that it will continue to monitor developments related to the incident and take further action if necessary.

The association reaffirmed its resolve to defend the independence of the legal profession and ensure that no lawyer is subjected to intimidation or unlawful detention in the course of their duties.
