Nigeria’s national electricity grid collapsed on Monday after major power plants simultaneously lost generation, plunging many parts of the country into darkness.

The grid went down at about 3:00p.m., shortly after power generation peaked at approximately 4,800 megawatts earlier in the day.

By the time of the collapse, generation had dropped sharply to 139 megawatts.

The exact cause of the system failure could not be immediately confirmed.

However, the collapse occurred amid ongoing efforts by the Nigerian Independent System Operator to ramp up power generation following recent gas supply constraints linked to pipeline vandalism.

As of the time of filing this report, all 22 power plants connected to the national grid had lost generation, further compounding the nationwide outage.

Electricity distribution companies across the country were yet to issue official statements on the development, while consumers continue to experience widespread blackouts.
