National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has declared January 14, 2026, as a National Day of Action to protest the planned implementation of the controversial Tax Reform Law, accusing the Federal Government of ignoring public concerns, constitutional procedures.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, signed by its National President, Olushola Oladoja, the students’ body announced plans for a peaceful mass protest, march to the Presidential Villa gate in Abuja, with Unity Fountain designated as the convergence point.

NANS expressed what it described as “profound disappointment and total lack of confidence” in the fiscal, economic advisers to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, alleging that their advice was pushing the administration toward an avoidable national confrontation.

“The National Association of Nigerian Students expresses its profound disappointment and total lack of confidence in the fiscal, economic advisers surrounding President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, whose misguided counsel has continued to push the administration towards an avoidable national confrontation over the controversial Tax Reform Law,” the statement said.

The Association specifically criticized the Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Mr Zacch Adedeji, describing his handling of stakeholder engagements on the new tax regime as a failure.

According to NANS, the decision to proceed with the implementation of the Tax Reform Law from January 1, 2026, was not only unfortunate but also set a dangerous precedent for a government that claims commitment to participatory reforms and democratic values

The students’ body argued that Nigeria operates a constitutional democracy and maintained that no policy should be imposed without broad public consent, especially when the National Assembly has reportedly raised concerns over discrepancies in the gazetted version of the law.
