Elon Musk has publicly denied any knowledge that his AI chatbot Grok has generated sexualized or explicit images involving minors, amid mounting international backlash over the tool’s content and safety practices.
In a post on his social media platform X on Wednesday, Musk said he was “not aware of any naked underage images generated by Grok. Literally zero,” adding that Grok is designed to refuse illegal requests and complies with the laws of each country where it is used.
His comments come as governments, regulators worldwide intensify scrutiny of Grok and its image generation features, which critics say have been used to produce sexually explicit deepfakes of adults and children. Several countries including Malaysia and Indonesia have blocked access to Grok, while investigations and legal actions are underway in nations such as the United Kingdom and across the European Union.
In response to the controversy, xAI and X have imposed limits on the chatbot’s ability to generate or edit images of real people in revealing clothing and have restricted certain features to paid subscribers as part of efforts to tighten safeguards.
Lawmakers in the United States are calling on Apple and Google to remove X and Grok from their app stores, citing the spread of non consensual sexualized content involving women and minors. Advocacy groups have echoed these calls, arguing that the current protections are inadequate to prevent harm.
In the United Kingdom, new laws to criminalise the creation of such explicit AI imagery are set to take effect this week, and regulators say they will monitor X’s compliance. European officials have also warned that if the changes to Grok’s safeguards fall short, stronger measures could be enforced under the bloc’s digital safety rules.
The controversy underscores the growing challenges and legal pressures facing developers of generative AI technologies as governments and civil society push for clearer accountability and enforceable safety standards.
