A 36 year old man has been charged after allegedly posing as a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agent in an attempt to secure the release of Luigi Mangione, the prime suspect in the high profile killing of a United States health insurance executive.

According to court documents, the suspect, identified as Mark Anderson, was arrested late on Wednesday at the Metropolitan Detention Centre in Brooklyn after prison officials demanded to see his credentials. Anderson reportedly failed to produce any official identification beyond his driver’s licence, later claimed he was carrying weapons.

A search of his backpack reportedly led to the discovery of a large barbecue fork and a round steel blade said to resemble a pizza cutter.

The criminal complaint further stated that Anderson told prison officials he had documents “signed by a judge” authorizing the release of a specific inmate. However, the filing did not name the inmate he was allegedly attempting to free.

Authorities are continuing investigations into the incident as Anderson faces charges related to impersonation and security breaches at the federal detention facility.
