Mali, Burkina Faso have announced a reciprocal travel ban on United States citizens, in direct response to a recent decision by the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump to place the two West African nations on a full U.S. travel ban list.

In separate statements issued late Tuesday by their respective foreign ministries, both countries said the move was based on the principle of reciprocity, following Washington’s announcement on December 16, 2025, that Mali and Burkina Faso along with five other countries would face sweeping travel restrictions into the United States.

The White House said the expanded travel ban, which is scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2026, targets countries with what it described as “persistent, severe deficiencies in screening, vetting, and information-sharing,” posing national security and public safety risks to the U.S.
However, Mali rejected the justification, stating that the decision was taken without prior consultation and does not reflect “actual developments on the ground.” The Malian government described the rationale behind the U.S. action as unfounded, unfair.

Burkina Faso issued a similar response, announcing restrictions on U.S. citizens entering the country as a proportional countermeasure.

The two countries are not alone in responding to Washington’s travel restrictions. On December 25, neighboring Niger announced it would stop issuing visas to US citizens, according to state media, citing diplomatic sources. Earlier in June, Chad also suspended visa issuance to Americans after it was included in a previous round of U.S. travel bans.

The growing list of reciprocal actions underscores rising diplomatic tensions between the United States and several African nations affected by the renewed travel restrictions, raising concerns over the broader implications for diplomacy, mobility, regional cooperation.
