Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has been convicted on firearm-related charges after discharging a rifle at a public rally in South Africa.

Under the country’s Firearms Control Act, the offences carry a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison. Sentencing for Malema is yet to be determined, the political and legal implications of the case are being closely watched.

The conviction adds to ongoing scrutiny of Malema’s leadership and public conduct, with opposition parties and civil society groups calling for strict enforcement of the law to uphold public safety.

Authorities have reaffirmed that firearm regulations in South Africa are strictly enforced, and violations are met with severe penalties to deter misuse and ensure citizen safety.

Malema retains the right to appeal the conviction once the court delivers its sentence.
