Former State House Deputy Chief of Staff in Malawi, Godfrey Arthur Jalale, who was arrested last Friday over allegations that he stole four German Shepherd dogs belonging to the State House, appeared in court today to face charges.

Proceedings at the Chief Resident Magistrate Court revealed that the dogs, valued at 4 million Malawian kwacha (about 52,800 Zambian kwacha), were allegedly taken from the State House premises between September 19 and October 4.

The charge sheet, which was read before the court, outlined a single count of theft. Jalale, however, entered a not guilty plea.

Prosecutors urged the court to remand him in custody, stating that investigations were still ongoing and that the missing dogs had not yet been recovered. They argued that continued detention was necessary to allow police to complete their inquiry without interference.

The case has been adjourned as the court considers the submissions made by both sides.
