Former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, has accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of open defiance of a court order, illegal detention, conducting a media trial against him.

In a press release dated December 23, 2025, Malami’s media aide, Mohammed Bello Doka, said the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, had granted bail to Mr. Malami on fulfilled conditions.

The EFCC, he alleged, refused to accept the court process, chased away the bailiff, and insisted on continuing his detention.

The statement described the action as lawless and a violation of Mr. Malami’s constitutional rights, noting that he has been held for over 14 days without arraignment before any court of competent jurisdiction.

According to the release, the EFCC’s detention is solely based on a court order, permitting a maximum 14-day detention, which had already expired.

The office further accused the EFCC of orchestrating a media trial by feeding selective narratives to the press in an attempt to influence public opinion and tarnish reputations.

Malami’s office called on the judiciary to take notice of what it described as contempt of court, urged relevant oversight bodies to hold the EFCC accountable.

The statement emphasized that Mr. Malami is willing to face due process in court but rejects trial by detention, media, or political vendetta.
