Justice M. S. Abubakar of the Federal High, Court sitting in Makurdi has sentenced Agene Johnson Godwin, Managing Director of Builderstech Solution Ltd, to 48 years imprisonment without an option of fine for defrauding thousands of investors of over ₦500 million.
Godwin was convicted on an amended eight count charge filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC. The court found that he fraudulently obtained funds from more than 5,000 unsuspecting victims under the guise of an investment scheme.
Delivering judgment, Justice Abubakar held that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and that the offences committed by the defendant caused severe financial hardship to a large number of Nigerians. The court consequently sentenced him to 48 years imprisonment without an option of fine.
The conviction marks another step in ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to clamp down on fraudulent investment schemes, protect members of the public from financial crimes.
