President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has charged the Chairman and members of the National Assembly Service Commission (NASC) to ensure that the principle of federal character is reflected in all the activities of the Commission.
Akpabio gave the charge on Thursday when the Chairman and members of the Sixth National Assembly Service Commission paid him their maiden visit at his office in Abuja.
The Senate President congratulated the Commission’s leadership on their appointment, expressing confidence that their wealth of experience and maturity would enable them to deliver effectively on their mandate.
“The leadership of both chambers made very good choices. I have no doubt that with your pedigrees, you will deliver on the mandate given to you,” Akpabio said.
“The maturity is there, so we should expect the best. I know that with your various vocations, your experiences will come to bear in ensuring that everything about the Commission; the welfare of staff, promotions, and even recruitment is handled in a way that reflects fairness and national character.”
Earlier, the Chairman of the Commission, Dr Saviour Enyiekere, expressed gratitude to the Senate President and the leadership of the National Assembly for the confidence reposed in them.
While acknowledging the challenges ahead, Enyiekere assured that the Commission was fully committed to addressing them decisively.
He said the NASC would not only build on the achievements of its predecessors but also work to restore confidence in the Commission’s capacity to effectively discharge its core responsibilities.
The Commission also presented proposals to the leadership of the National Assembly, including the establishment of a Council of former Presiding Officers of the National Assembly and the reintroduction and construction of new National Assembly Legislative Quarters.
