The Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has revealed that 400 cases of environmental infractions were prosecuted across the state in 2025, including a recent case where a man caught dumping waste indiscriminately is now serving a jail term.

The disclosure was made in a statement by LAWMA’s Director of Public Affairs, Mukaila Sanusi, quoting the agency’s Managing Director/CEO, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, during an appearance on Sunrise Daily. Gbadegesin stressed that responsible waste disposal is central to achieving a cleaner, sustainable, and liveable Lagos.

“LAWMA remains committed to enforcing environmental laws and holding offenders accountable. Proper waste management is key to a cleaner city,” Gbadegesin said, noting that ongoing operations include routine waste evacuation, clearing of identified flashpoints, and strengthening collection services across the state.

Gbadegesin also highlighted the importance of waste sorting at source, emphasizing that separating recyclables from general waste improves collection efficiency, supports recycling efforts, and reduces pressure on landfills.

The LAWMA boss added that waste should be seen as a valuable resource, not just refuse, and that recycling initiatives can create jobs, encourage private sector participation, and protect the environment. He advocated for a circular economy approach, where materials are recovered, reused, and recycled, instead of following a linear collection-and-disposal system.

Residents were urged to cooperate with LAWMA by avoiding indiscriminate dumping and reporting violations promptly, reinforcing the shared responsibility in maintaining a clean and healthy Lagos.

LAWMA, a statutory agency under the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, coordinates solid waste management, recycling, and sanitation across the state to address challenges arising from rapid urbanization and population growth.
