The Lagos State Police Command has dismissed widespread social media claims that a police inspector was seen in a viral video stealing, describing the narrative as “false and misleading.”
The video, which circulated widely on Wednesday December 10, showed a bleeding police officer sitting on the ground as an irate mob surrounded him.
In the footage, the inspector appeared distressed and pleaded with the crowd while onlookers recorded the scene.
Chants of “Ole!” (thief) echoed in the background, though the alleged offence was not clearly depicted.
A yellow commercial bus marked “Ayedade” in the video suggested the incident took place along a busy Lagos route.
Another police officer was seen attempting to rescue the injured inspector from the crowd.
In a statement on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer for Lagos State Command, SP Abimbola Adebisi, clarified that the officer, attached to the Lagos State Taskforce, was carrying out official duties, enforcing the government’s ban on illegal parking on Brown Street, Oshodi, when the incident occurred.

According to the statement:
“In the course of his duty, he stopped a motorist who attempted to park wrongly. The motorist became violent, resulting in a heated confrontation.”
Adebisi further explained that during the altercation, the inspector accidentally discharged shots onto the road, causing debris from the impact to injure some passersby. This reportedly triggered the mob attack.
The Police Command confirmed that the inspector has been placed under disciplinary review for “unprofessional conduct.”
Meanwhile, 13 suspects who were captured in the video assaulting the officer have been arrested, are currently in police custody.
They are expected to be prosecuted upon completion of investigations.
The suspects were identified as:
Dele Oriade (39), Adekunle Olalere (40), Mudashiru Olamilekan (28), Anayo Achusie (34), Joshua Enwonyin (24), Okoro Okechukwu (26), Rilwan Lateef (32), Damilare Odebode (22), Haruna Aleshi (25), Sodiq Omoniyi (26), Chukwudi Patience (25), Godstime Okafor (26), and Chinedu Divine (29).

Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, condemned both the inspector’s conduct and the mob assault, stressing that “assaulting law enforcement officers is a criminal offence and will not be condoned under no circumstances.”
He urged Lagos residents to remain calm, refrain from spreading false information, then cooperate with law enforcement agencies in maintaining order.
The Police Command reiterated that investigations are ongoing and promised to provide further updates.
